Carpentry Training Courses
Carpentry training courses are offered by almost all trade schools
as well as local union apprentice classes. While the majority of
experience will be gained from on the job training, in order to move up
the ladder additional formal classes should be considered.
Carpentry Courses
On this web page I will discuss some of the more common carpentry courses offered by union training centers and trade schools.
Basic Stairs
This class presents the basic theory, calculations, code requirements,
safety, proper layout, cutting, and assembly of open and closed stringer
stairs. The length of stairwell openings are also covered.
Intermediate Stairs
Carpentry training covered by this course includes calculations, code
requirements, layout, cutting and assembly for limited run, change of
direction stairs, and the three step winder. Maintaining headroom
is also covered.
Basic Rafters
This course presents basic theory, calculations, and proper layout
practices of gable and hip roof rafters. Rise, run, pitch, slope, and
rafter lengths for common, hip, and jack rafters are taught. Common
problems encountered with simple hip and gable roof framing are
presented.
Rafters II
Reviews proper layout and calculations for common, hip, and jack
rafters. This training course introduces intersecting equal pitch roofs
with an emphasis on layout and installation of valley rafters and
jacks.
Rafters III
Begins with review of equal pitch intersecting roofs, supporting
and shortened valley rafters, valley jacks, proper ridge board length,
layout, and installation procedures. Turret or octagon shaped roofs,
chimney saddles, and saddles for roof overlays are also presented.
Rafters IV
Trains the carpenter in rafter layout and installation procedures for unequal pitched gable and hip roofs.

Print Reading
Training is designed to introduce or reinforce abbreviations, symbols, and drawing standards commonly found in blue prints.
Framing Square
Training introduces the parts of the framing square and shows practical
applications of the rafter tables, Essex board measure, octagon, brace
measure, twelfths, and hundredths scales. Practical layout exercises
are usually included.
Metal Stud Framing
Reading of blueprints related to wall framing, converting finish
measurements to rough wall layout, installation of hollow metal door
frames, knock down door frames, and stud layout procedures.
Lathers Layout
Introduces the carpenter to the methods of laying out elliptical and
segmental arches, ceilings, and walls. Layout of spring, center, split,
lath lines, as well as placement of carriers and furring channels.
Commercial Geometric Layout
Course is designed to introduce the carpenter to the methods of commercial layout. These include changing finish wall dimensions
to rough wall or track lines, layout of octagons, circles, segments of
a circle, erecting a perpendicular and working with control lines.
If you think carpentry training is expensive, rely on ignorance for a while.
